The Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere was built between 1872 and 1884 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who saved the city of Lyon from a cholera epidemic in 1643. Each year on December 8,Lyon thanks the Virgin for saving the city by lighting candles throughout the city, in what is called the Fete des Lumieres or Festival Of Lights

#Lyon is divided by two rivers: the Saône and the Rhône. There are many beautiful bridges crossing those rivers, but this is one of my favourites. You can find it by following the Saône up north. It’s located a bit before the beautiful Barbe Island, which is a small island in the middle of the Saône. It’s worth visiting.
The Place des Jacobins is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and has a lot of history. It was created in 1556 and since that has had its named changed for several times. The fountain was only added in 1856 but the main monument have changed a lot. Crosses, obelisk, pyramid were the main monument until 1885, when four different artists finished the actual monument.
Lyon is incredibly beautiful at night.

Lyon is the third biggest city in France. Located around 400 km from Paris and 270km from Marseilles, it’s a good base to explore the country. It’s also close to the French Apls, and to the beautiful departments of Auvergne e Provence.

The Théâtre des #Celéstines in #Lyon is also classified by #UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. First constructed in 1789, the building was completely destroyed by fire in 1871. It was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1877. The city of Lyon took over the theatre and made a major renovation between 2002 and 2005. It’s possible to find the full list of shows in their website in both French and English.
